Welcome to the first "DIKE - Digitization of Indigenous Knowledge for Extended Reality and Culture" Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality Summer School.
We are excited to announce that the summer school will be held at the Borneo Cultures Museum from March 3-12, 2023. This event is a collaboration between the University of Technology Sarawak, the University of Applied Sciences Berlin, and the Humboldt-University zu Berlin, Germany. The school is sponsored by the Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienstes (DAAD).
The Summer School is a 9 days residential program where the participants will immerse themselves in learning, hands-on exercises, and networking opportunities with local and international experts in the field of AR/VR, Culture and Heritage, Participatory Design and Human-Computers Interaction.
The Borneo Cultures Museum is the latest and greatest icon not just for Kuching but for Sarawak as a whole. Largest in Malaysia (2nd largest in Southeast Asia),
the museum is a world-class attraction, with carefully curated exhibits that incorporate new technology, engaging story-telling, and interactive features. More than 1,000 artifacts representing the rich culture and tradition of the
indigenous peoples of Borneo and Sarawak are housed in this museum with a 30% interactive exhibition. The museum has five levels, the first housing a gallery for temporary exhibitions and the second housing a children’s gallery, a Love our Rivers part, and an Arts and Crafts area. The permanent thematic galleries “In Harmony with Nature” (which features sights from Borneo’s coasts, jungles, and highlands), “Time Changes” (which highlights cave discoveries and the creation of Sarawak), and “Objects of Desire” are located on levels 3, 4, and 5. The museum also hosts a variety of educational programs, including lectures, workshops, and guided tours, which provide visitors with a deeper understanding of the cultural heritage of Borneo.
We welcome applications from the undergraduate and postgraduate students, currently enrolled in HEIs of Malaysia. The applications will be reviewed by a board of reviewers. Up to 20 applications will be accepted for joining the summer school. Basic knowledge and experience with C# programming and the Unity engine is preferred, but not compulsory for this opportunity. We may arrange some online tutorial and guidance sessions before the Summer school. The Summer School is fully funded 9 days residential program and there is no fee to attend the Summer School. The organizers will also provide limited support for accommodation and travel to and from Kuching, if needed.
